Why Your Chair Matters More Than Your Desk
You sit in your chair 6–10 hours a day. A bad chair causes lower back pain, sciatica, neck strain, and shoulder tension — problems that compound over months and years. A good ergonomic chair is the single most important purchase in your home office.
Essential Adjustments
- Seat height — Must adjust so feet sit flat on floor with knees at 90°
- Lumbar support — Adjustable height AND depth. Fixed lumbar is better than nothing but rarely fits perfectly.
- Seat depth — Sliding seat pan so the backrest contacts your lower back without the seat edge pressing behind your knees.
- Armrests — Height-adjustable at minimum. 4D (height, width, depth, angle) is ideal. Arms should rest at 90° without shrugging shoulders.
- Recline & tilt — Tilt tension control lets you lean back with resistance. Recline lock at multiple angles is a plus.
Mesh vs Foam
Mesh chairs (Herman Miller Aeron, Steelcase Karman) are breathable and stay cool but provide less cushion and can feel firm. Foam chairs (Steelcase Leap, Secretlab Titan) offer more cushioning and warmth but trap heat. If you run hot or live in a warm climate, mesh wins. If you prefer plush comfort or a cold environment, foam wins.
