Home Office Lighting Guide

Monitor light bars, desk lamps, and video call lighting for eye comfort and productivity.

Three Layers of Light

A well-lit office uses three layers: ambient (overhead/room lighting), task (focused desk lighting), and accent (optional, for video calls or aesthetics). Most home offices nail ambient but neglect task lighting — leading to eye strain.

Monitor Light Bars

The single best lighting investment. A monitor light bar (BenQ ScreenBar, Quntis, Baseus) sits on top of your monitor and illuminates your desk without creating glare on your screen. It reduces eye strain by minimizing the contrast between your bright screen and dark surroundings. $30–$100, immediate improvement.

Natural Light

Position your desk perpendicular to windows. Facing a window causes glare and squinting. Backing a window creates silhouettes on video calls. Side lighting from a window gives even, flattering illumination.

Video Call Lighting

For video calls, a key light at 45° to your face eliminates shadows. The Elgato Key Light ($180) is the pro standard. Budget option: a ring light behind your camera ($30). Even a desk lamp pointed at the wall behind your monitor creates useful bounce light.
